During the period 1996-2000 the Greek Ministry of National Education & Religious Affairs founded 499 School Libraries “EPEAEK” in Secondary Education (in a total of 3460 schools in the territory ), financed by national funds by the 2nd European Community Support Framework.

The Libraries were built inside the school units, with a balanced geographical distribution throughout the country.

School Libraries are not intended as public or municipal libraries. They belong to the school community.

The first 49 School Libraries were staffed with library scientists and functioned as a pilot programmme. They were created by the National Youth Foundation (“EIN”) and the School Building Organization (“OSK”) in collaboration with the National Documentation Center (“EKT”).

The other 450 were staffed with teachers of Secondary Level of Education ( for ages 13-18 ) and constituted the development of the scheme. They were materialised by Universities and Technological Education Institutes in collaboration with “EIN”, “OSK” and “EKT” as above.
The materialisation programmes were named after the historical region they belong to or neighbour with. For instance, the programme brought about by the University of Pireas was called “SALAMIS”, that by the University of Thessaloniki was called “PELLA” and the one by the University of Crete was called “KNOSSOS”.

Today all School Libraries are staffed with full-time Secondary Education teachers. Another 266 School Libraries are in process under the 3rd European Community Support Framework.

The function of Greek School Libraries is under the supervision of the Ministry of Education, which is responsible for the development and viability of the School Library Net in our country. The Ministry also supervises the library catalogue, which draws from the Ministry’s List of Approved Titles.

The initial catalogue in the first School Libraries contained approximately 6.000 titles, selected by the Ministry, and was common for all 499 Libraries, whereas the catalogue of the School Libraries currently under construction will be selected by each schools’ library committee drawing from the Ministry’s List of 13.419 Approved Titles.

Every School Library contains in a unified space several bookcases, a reading section, a reception-registration-information desk and the PC compartment. They are also supplied with air conditioning, a fire-alarm system and a burglar alarm.

The internet services of the School Libraries Net are provided by the Greek School Network (GSN/Edunet). Every Library has its own account in the GSN, which includes personal web-hosting (html, d-html, php), e-mail (POP, webmail), School Libraries List e.t.c. Access to the Internet is possible either by Broadband connection, (ADSL), either by ISDN connection, depending on the school’s dial-up settings.

The School Library Network is a Server/Client Network. The operation system is Win'NT Server for the Server and Win'98SE for the Clients. The special library automation system software (ABEKT 5.0) was designed by the National Documentation Center (EKT) for Windows platforms, which manages multilingual data using the UNICODE character set.

Finally, the Greek School Network is He.S.Li.F.’s webhost.
